Practical Portfolio: Build a Portfolio Easily with HTML, CSS, and Themes
Unfiltered Development Philosophy
What is Unfiltered Development? Unfiltered Development philosophy is a course style that teaches you how to build applications with errors and debugging included. As a Software Developer, you will run into problems and bugs. The only way to get better as a Software Developer is to read errors and fix them.
I try to make my courses in a way where it is less about hand-holding and instead prioritize how a software developer approaches a problem. My courses will include me debugging errors and resolving them, an everyday task for a software developer! I hope you enjoy! 🔥
Requirements
- A Mac or Windows Computer
What You Will Build/Learn
Github Repository (WIP) - https://github.com/kkomaz/my-portfolio-course
Live in Production (WIP) - https://alexleetechrally.netlify.app/
In this course, you will build a portfolio page easily and quickly! This project will be built locally and eventually will be deployed to production via Netlify! There are two camps in regards to building a portfolio page
- Build it yourself from scratch
- Leverage a theme and make edits as needed
I am a huge believer of leveraging a theme whenever possible, especially a portfolio page. Building your portfolio from scratch has its benefits where you will learn during the process. However, there are a lot of pitfalls to do this.
- You are not a designer - Even if you are good at CSS, it is really hard to build an aesthetic portfolio from scratch. You can spend hours, weeks, months, or years to build a beautiful portfolio but the time spent on recreating the wheel could be more detrimental than beneficial.
- More time to focus on projects - The portfolio site is meant to showcase your projects. If you spend a majority of your time working on your portfolio site, it takes time away from the projects you want to showcase
- You still use HTML and CSS - Just because you use themes, does not mean you don't have to know HTML and CSS. All themes do is provide you a skeleton to build your project. You still need to read the code and make modifications to your liking.
All three pitfalls are the reasons why leveraging a theme is the better choice. My intention with this course it to help you build and deploy a beautiful portfolio page quickly to help you land a job faster.Â
Hiring managers and recruiters are looking at tons of portfolio sites everyday. They are expecting to see a portfolio site in a certain way and if it deviates too much or looks too elementary, there will be a bias to skip you as a potential candidate.
I'm super excited to show you how easy it can be to build something like this and get it up on production. Let's get to it! 💯
